Duke of Richmond

A carte-de-visite portrait of the British politician Charles Henry Gordon-Lennox (1818-1903), from 1860 the 6th Duke of Richmond and Lennox.

Born at Richmond House, his father was Charles Lennox, 5th Duke of Richmond and Lennox, and his mother was Lady Caroline née Paget. He was styled Earl of March from birth and was educated at Westminster and Christ Church, Oxford, where he had a short career as a cricket player. He served in the Royal House Guards and was aide-de-camp to the Duke of Wellington. He entered politics as the member for Sussex West in 1841. In 1859 he became a Privy Councillor and the following year he succeeded his father as Duke of Richmond and took his seat in the House of Lords. He filled various positions in government and was created a Knight of the Garter in 1867. He was also a Chancellor of the University of Aberdeen from 1861 until his death at Gordon Castle on 27 September 1903.

He married Frances Harriett Greville on 28 November 1843. They had six children.
