Font at Pevensey Castle

Font at Pevensey Castle

A carte-de-visite showing an early stone font in the grounds of Pevensey Castle in East Sussex.

The original fort was constructed by the Romans but fell into disrepair following the end of the Roman occupation. It was reoccupied by the Normans in 1066 and then remained more or less occupied until the 15th century.

The font is still there today, though now without the protective cage seen here.

Photographer unidentified.

A printed label verso reads: 'Pevensey Castle / Ancient font.'
