Marchioness Townshend

Marchioness Townshend

A carte-de-visite portrait of Marchioness Townshend (1804-1877).

The daughter of Rear-Admiral Lord George Stuart, Elizabeth Jane Stuart was born in Madras in or about 1804. On 18 August 1825 she married John Townshend, later 4th Marquess Townshend. She died on 27 January 1877.

On 31 January 1877 the Times carried the following report: 'Our obituary column yesterday contained the name of the Dowager Lady Townshend, whose death occurred on Saturday at her residence in Queen Anne Street, Cavendish Square, at the age of 73. Her Ladyship was Elizabeth Jane, eldest daughter of the late Rear-Admiral Lord George Stuart, and granddaughter of John, first Marquis of Bute, and great-granddaughter, therefore, of the Earl of Bute, the Premier in the early days of George III. She was married in August, 1825, to Captain John Townshend, R.N., some time M.P. for Tamworth, and eventually fourth Marquis Townshend, but was left a widow in September 1863. She had a family of six children, four of whom survive her - namely, the present Lord Townshend, Lady Anna Maria Sherson, Lady Audrey Howard, and Lady Elizabeth St. Aubyn. '

Photographed by Camille Silvy of London on 2 November 1860.
