Mrs Alice Gurney

Alice Maria Princep was the daughter of Henry Thoby Princep (1792-1878), an official in the Indian Civil Service who became an influential figure in British cultural circles. She was born on 6 June 1844, probably at 87 Hyde Park Gardens, the address her father gave when she was baptised at St James's Paddington on 16 October that year.

She married, firstly, at Kensington in 1861, Charles Henry Gurney, son of the wealthy Quaker banker Daniel Gurney. The marriage produced three children but eventually ended in divorce.

The couple appear on the 1871 census living at 36 Lowndes Street in Belgravia with the first of their children, Laura (born 1867). He gave his profession as 'Discount Broker.' The household included six servants, among them a butler, a footman and a groom.

After her divorce from her first husband, Alice married John Bourchier Strachey-Clitherow, formerly a Major in the Scots Guards, on 13 January 1897 at the register office in the district of St George's Hanover Square. The couple appear on the 1901 census living at Hotham Hall in Yorkshire.

Alice died on 22 November 1919 at the age of 75.
