Mrs Henry Sanford


A carte-de-visite portrait of Mrs Henry Sanford, wife of the American diplomat Henry Shelton Sanford, who served as the US ambassador to Belgium from 1861 to 1869.

Born Gertrude Ellen Dupuy in Philadelphia on 27 June 1841, she was daughter of John Dupuy and Mary Richards née Haskins. She married Sanford in Paris on 21 September 1864. The marriage produced seven children.

Mrs Sandford died on 1 June 1902 in Derby, Connecticut.
