Nathaniel Hibbert

A carte-de-visite portrait of Nathaniel Hibbert of Munden House, Aldenham, Hertfordshire.

Born on 17 January 1794, he was the eldest son of the merchant and Chairman of the West India Dock Company George Hibbert and his wife Elizabeth Margaret née Fonnereau. He was baptised on 12 March 1794 at St Botolph's, Bishopsgate. Educated at Winchester and at Trinity College, Cambridge, he was admitted to Lincoln's Inn in 1814. On 1 January 1828 at York he married Emily Smith, daughter of the Reverend Sidney Smith, Canon of St Paul's. The marriage produced two daughters, Katherine and Elizabeth Margaret.

On the 1861 census Nathaniel is recorded as a 'Landed Proprietor and Fund Holder'.

He died on 18 July 1865, aged 71, without surviving male issue, leaving Munden to his wife Emily, on whose death in 1874 it passed under her will to her grandson the Hon Arthur Henry Holland, son of her daughter, Elizabeth Margaret and Henry Thurstan Holland, first Viscount Knutsford, who on coming of age took the additional surname Hibbert.
