Peasant from Roskilde

A hand-coloured carte-de-visite portrait of a Danish man wearing the traditional costume of his region. The caption in French identifies him as a 'peasant from Roskilde,' while according to a Danish caption he is a 'peasant from Hedebo-Egnen.'

According to Danish Wikipedia, Hedeboegnen denotes the triangular area between Høje-Taastrup, Roskilde and Køge. The name refers to the fact that the area was woodless in a period when most of Denmark was wooded.
