'In April 1870, four aristocratic travellers, three British and one Italian, while on an excursion to Marathon, were kidnapped by Greek brigands. The hostages were held for ransom but the negotiations were bungled amid political meddling. The rescue attempt failed too, and the four men were eventually murdered by their captors at Dilessi, on the Boeotian coast. A major diplomatic incident ensued.'
